Cleanout services in Campbell, where Black Monday landed

Campbell carries the Valley’s history harder than anywhere. This was the home of Youngstown Sheet & Tube’s Campbell Works — the mill whose sudden closure on September 19, 1977 became Black Monday, idling five thousand workers in a single announcement. The town was even renamed for the company’s chairman back in 1926. When the mill went, Campbell’s arc bent with it: from nearly 15,000 people in 1930 to about half that today.

The houses tell that story block by block. Mill-era stock built for Greek, Italian, and Slovak steel families, including Iron Soup, the world’s first prefabricated concrete home development, put up by Sheet & Tube itself after 1916. Roughly one home in eight sits vacant. And the estates that come up here have a particular shape: the last of the mill generation passing, with heirs who left for Columbus or Charlotte decades ago and now own a full house they’ve barely visited.

That makes Campbell the coverage area’s capital of the long-distance cleanout. The estate cleanout runs remotely more often here than anywhere: photos to the family, decisions by phone, irreplaceables shipped, the rest sorted to donation and haul. It helps that Campbell is the closest town on this site to the Youngstown base, minutes away, so walkthroughs and check-ins are easy to arrange around an heir’s single weekend in town.

The other Campbell reality is the rental market. Low prices have moved a large share of the stock into landlord hands, which means turnovers, set-outs, and the occasional severely cluttered unit, work that crosses into hoarding cleanup territory when a longtime tenant’s accumulation fills the rooms.
